Chapter Sponsored Event at National Earthquake Conference

A Free public panel at the Peabody Hotel, Venetian Room on April 10 from 7 to 9:30pm. (Hosted reception with light refreshments at 6:30). Please come join us!

A cross-disciplinary series of presentations and a panel Q & A. We call attention to culturally important unreinforced brick buildings that are also fragile and need to be properly maintained, repaired, and retrofit so they can last into the future. We emphasize not just seismic, but also multi- hazard resilience, best-practices conservation technology, and energy saving improvements.

The South Main Retrofit Demonstration Project lays out a roadmap to address these issues for thousands of bearing wall brick main-street style buildings in the mid-south. The first phase is design and construction to retrofit one building, which will serve as an event and exhibit space. From there we will develop strategies that could lead to most of these buildings being retrofit within 25 years. These buildings are about 100 years old, Memphis has been reclaiming them from decay, and re-purposing them for contemporary uses. Our goal is to prepare them to last another 100 years.

This event is part of the National Earthquake Conference which is coming to Memphis on the occasion of 200th anniversary of the great New Madrid Earthquakes.
